Liverpool and Tottenham are reportedly interested in signing Inter Milan central midfielder Nicolo Barella ahead of the summer transfer window.

According to Calcio Mercato, both Liverpool and Tottenham are keen on signing the Italian international, who is contracted to Inter until 2024. This comes after Liverpool were also linked with Barella back at the start of November.

Reports earlier this season claimed that Inter are looking to extend Barella’s contract further to help ward off interest from potential clubs.

ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT

Liverpool could potentially be looking at Barella as a replacement for Gini Wijnaldum in the summer, who appears poised to leave the club on a free transfer. Wijnaldum has reportedly rejected Liverpool’s latest contract offer and is trying to force through a move to Barcelona, which could leave the club needing a central midfielder to come through the door.

Barella has averaged an impressive WhoScored rating of 7.02 in the Serie A this season, with 1.9 tackles and 1.1 key passes per game for Inter. Wijnaldum, on the other hand, has averaged a score of 6.66 in the Premier League for Liverpool this season. This suggests that Barella could actually be an upgrade on the Dutchman, whilst he is also seven years younger, giving Liverpool more time to work and develop with him as a player as he ages.

It could be an interesting summer for Liverpool as they weigh up which positions they want to improve and add to. Although, that could be determined by what happens in the second half, in terms of players coming back from injury and whether or not they win some major trophies.
