Football is at its best when it remembers those it has lost. On Sunday, when Liverpool face Preston North End at Deepdale, the match will mean more than just pre-season sharpness. It will serve as a moment of collective mourning, a shared silence for Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, who both tragically lost their lives in a car accident in Spain.
Liverpool supporters know how to grieve with grace and power. Before kick-off at 3pm, You’ll Never Walk Alone will ring out across the ground, carrying with it more weight than usual. Preston will lay a wreath with Reds supporters, a rare yet fitting gesture of unity. It is football doing what it does best: bringing people together in moments of loss.
Players from both sides will wear black armbands. A minute’s silence will follow. The stadium screens and pitchside LEDs will carry digital tributes, subtle reminders that some things matter more than football.
Preston have produced a commemorative matchday programme, filled with written tributes to Diogo and Andre. The game will be shown live on ITV in the UK, LFCTV, and All Red Video worldwide from 2.15pm.
There will also be a pre-match show broadcast from Deepdale across Liverpool’s social channels and YouTube, building towards an emotional 3pm kick-off.
