Luis Diaz’s position at Liverpool has rarely felt more fragile. Despite travelling with the squad for the Asian pre-season tour, doubts persist over his long-term future. Contract talks have stalled, Bayern Munich remain interested, and Saudi Pro League links continue to bubble under the surface.

As Caught Offside reports, the Colombian’s desire for a pay rise, said to be around £140,000 to £150,000 per week, has yet to be met by sporting director Richard Hughes. With no breakthrough in sight and a €100 million valuation hovering over negotiations, Liverpool are beginning to plan for a potential exit.
Caught Offside claims that Malick Fofana has emerged as a serious candidate should Liverpool move on from Diaz this summer. The 20-year-old Belgian, who had a breakthrough campaign with Lyon last season, is seen as one of Europe’s brightest wing prospects. His five goals and four assists in just 16 Ligue 1 starts have not gone unnoticed.

According to the report, Liverpool have already held discussions with Fofana’s representatives. The winger is currently valued between €50m and €60m, a fee that would provide much-needed financial relief for Lyon, who are under pressure to raise funds.
Liverpool are not alone in their interest. Paris Saint-Germain, Napoli and Juventus are also monitoring Fofana’s situation. Meanwhile, Chelsea, Arsenal, Newcastle, Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa have all been credited with interest from within the Premier League.

However, Liverpool’s status as reigning Premier League champions may tip the balance in their favour. With a top-class coaching set-up, European football, and a strong pathway to first-team football under Arne Slot, Anfield remains an attractive destination for emerging talent.
What happens next depends almost entirely on Luis Diaz. If Bayern or Al-Nassr come forward with a suitable offer, Liverpool may choose to cash in and reinvest promptly. In that scenario, Malick Fofana becomes more than just a speculative name. He becomes a live option.

Slot’s tactical reshuffle this summer has already seen significant change. With Florian Wirtz capable of filling multiple roles and Rio Ngumoha showing promise in pre-season, Liverpool may also choose to promote from within. Still, the presence of serious conversations around Fofana points to a club leaving nothing to chance.

Fofana looks like a smart, modern winger. He is young, technically gifted and showed strong numbers in a struggling Lyon side. But this feels like a big gamble. Liverpool would be replacing an experienced, hard-working and settled international in Diaz with a 20-year-old who is still finding his feet in European football.
We’ve seen this before, of course. Liverpool have backed their scouts and analysts to unearth the next big thing. Sometimes that pays off. Other times, it takes years to bridge the gap. And that is the concern.
If Diaz goes, there is no room for error. The pressure on Fofana to perform straight away would be immense, especially in a team where expectations have returned overnight. Is he ready for that? Is Liverpool ready to trust that he is?
Supporters will want assurances. A smart succession plan is one thing, but this can’t just be a cost-cutting exercise in disguise. The drop-off from Diaz to a prospect must be compensated by system, structure and long-term vision. Otherwise, the short-term impact could bite.
