Jürgen Klopp named a very strong Liverpool line-up for the fixture, which appeared not to be enough to defeat a Manchester City until Sadio Mané’s 94th-minute penalty gave the Reds the win in New Jersey.

Leroy Sané started the scoring, finishing off a fantastic counter-attack and firing a shot across goal to give City the lead just before the hour mark.

Going into the match, all eyes were on Mohamed Salah at a wet MetLife Stadium, where the reigning Premier Golden Boot winner and Player of the Year started on the bench following a World Cup affected by a shoulder injury sustained in the Champions League final loss to Real Madrid.

Salah would score just seconds after his introduction, heading in a brilliant cross which evaded the entire defence. City fans will be furious as replays showed he was he was clearly offside when the cross came in.

Sadio Mané wasted two great chances during the closing stages but it did not matter as he stepped up and converted a 94th-minute penalty after Dominic Solanke was bundled over in the box.

Liverpool will walk away from this performance disappointed not to have performed better, considering how young and inexperienced the lineup Pep Guardiola put out on the field on Wednesday night.
