Liverpool will have to be patient as they attempt to lure ‘top priority’ Jude Bellingham to Anfield from Borussia Dortmund, transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has told GiveMeSport.

Cody Gakpo has been the only fresh face to join the Reds during the January window, having completed a £44million switch from PSV Eindhoven, but boss Jurgen Klopp could welcome further reinforcements to Merseyside ahead of the fast-approaching deadline.

Liverpool transfer news – Jude Bellingham

According to the Daily Mail, Bellingham is Liverpool’s top transfer target and the club are preparing a double swoop which would also see Matheus Nunes head to Anfield from Wolverhampton Wanderers in the summer.

The report suggests the England international is coveted by Manchester City and La Liga giants Real Madrid, meaning the Reds are facing stiff competition for his signature.

In a boost for Bellingham’s suitors, he is expected to reject a new Dortmund contract, sparking a battle for the £150million-rated star’s signature.

But the 19-year-old’s current employers are not necessarily under pressure to sanction his exit as his deal, which is worth £49,000-per-week, still has two-and-a-half years to run.

Respected journalist Christian Falk recently told GiveMeSport that Klopp is ‘fighting’ for Fenway Sports Group to stump up the cash needed to strike a deal for Bellingham.

What has Fabrizio Romano said about Bellingham?

Romano understands that Bellingham remains at the top of Liverpool boss Klopp’s shortlist of targets.

But the respected Italian journalist insists the Merseyside outfit will have to play the waiting game when it comes to attempting to reach an agreement.

Romano told GiveMeSport: “We know the top priority for Liverpool is Jude Bellingham.

“But Real Madrid and Manchester City are also there, so the race is absolutely open. Nothing will be decided in a few hours or days for Bellingham. It takes time.”

Would Bellingham be a good signing for Liverpool?

Bellingham contributed at both ends of the pitch as England reached the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup, with Sofascore statistics showing he averaged 3.2 tackles per outing, while also finding the back of the net once and racking up as many assists.

Bellingham has shone in the Bundesliga and Champions League, registering the highest WhoScored average match rating among his teammates in both competitions this term.

Speaking on ITV, via MailOnline, former Manchester United captain Roy Keane has suggested the teenager is ‘going to be a superstar’.

That makes Bellingham an attractive option for Klopp and, with central midfielders James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain facing an uncertain future due to their respective contracts being due to expire in the summer, Liverpool should do all they can to win the race for his services.
