Liverpool began life under Arne Slot in successful fashion as they beat Real Betis 1-0 in Pittsburgh.

The Reds were defeated in a behind-closed-doors friendly by Preston but this was their first official pre-season match, kicking off the USA tour.

Mohamed Salah and Dominik Szoboszlai were among those named in the starting lineup and the pair combined for what proved to be the winner before half-time.

The Egyptian slid a pass through to Szoboszlai, who finished superbly into the bottom corner with ten minutes to go until the break.

Slot had already been forced into a change by that point, with Curtis Jones walking off and straight down the tunnel during a water break.

It was 17-year-old Trey Nyoni called upon to replace him in midfield and the teenager was hugely impressive in his cameo of just over 40 minutes, showing real composure on the ball in a display offering plenty of signs that he is ready for further first-team involvement.

Slot made eight changes on the hour mark, in what proved to be a second-half lacking in much action.

The best chance came when Harvey Blair went round the goalkeeper and the ball ran through to Kaide Gordon, who could not find the empty net from a tight angle.

Ben Doak was bright on the right wing, twice beating his man to skip into the box, but the second goal did not come for Liverpool.

They now turn their attention to two high-profile fixtures against Premier League rivals, first against Arsenal in Philadelphia and then Manchester United in South Carolina.

Liverpool will then return to the UK for their final pre-season match, at home to Sevilla on August 11.
