We're now being run through a quick explainer of how the draw and format will work, but, I promise we are not far away.

Ronaldo beat Buffon in the 2017 final, scoring twice in Cardiff.

The second has gone to Cristiano Ronaldo as recognition for his standing as the all-time top scorer in the competition - a staggering 140 goals.

We are now live in Monaco, and two awards have been handed out by UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin.

The first, the President's Award, goes to Italy and Juventus legend Gianluigi Buffon. Arguably the greatest keeper of all time, he somehow never won the Champions League, losing three finals.

This year's final takes place in the Allianz Arena, home of Bayern Munich, on Saturday May 31st 2025.

The sides who finish 1-8 in the league phase will automatically qualify for the last 16, while the sides who finish 9-24 will enter a knockout stage playoff round to decide the final eight sides. From here, it will be like the Champions League we have all become used to.

New year, new format!

This, of course, is the first year of the "Swiss model" format, which sees four extra teams in the tournament. All 36 sides will be in one big league, with each playing eight games (four home, four away) before the knockout stages begin.

Teams will be seeded into four pots. Each team will play two sides from each pot (one home, one away).

In the league phase, teams from the same country will not play one another, while teams will only be allowed play a maximum of two teams from one country.

The draw "starts" at 5pm BST, but as you are all likely aware by now, the actual draw usually begins a little bit after that.
