Manchester United’s Lisandro Martinez is a World Cup semi-finalist with Argentina.

Lionel Scaloni’s side took the lead against the Netherlands through Nahuel Molina in the 35th minute thanks to an exceptional pass from seven-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi.

United target Denzel Dumfries then fouled Marcos Acuna, which led to a penalty kick being converted by Messi – doubling Argentina’s lead.

The Dutch then pulled one back in the closing stages of normal time through substitute Wout Weghorst. In the 10th minute of injury-time, they pulled off one of the most extraordinary free kicks to level the tie in the final seconds of the match.

The match remained level through extra time, meaning yet another quarter-final would be decided through a penalty shootout. Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk missed the opening penalty, as did Steven Berghuis. Argentina scored three consecutive spot-kicks before Enzo Fernandez struck his wide, but Lautauro Martinez netting the fifth penalty secured their place in the semi-final.

Argentina will face Croatia, who knocked out Brazil earlier today. The tie is set for Tuesday, December 13 at 7 pm.
