Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez has revealed that he and new head coach Ruben Amorim share the same view of football, which has enabled them to connect.

Amorim was appointed United boss last month as a replacement for the sacked Erik ten Hag.

The Portuguese coach has so far overseen four matches across the Premier League and the Europa League. He has won two, drawn one and lost one.

Martinez has regularly been picked by Amorim as part of United’s three-man defence. The Argentina international was a big miss in mid-week as United slipped to a 2-0 loss at the hands of Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal.

Since his move from Ajax in the summer of 2022, Martinez has proven to be popular with supporters, who have lauded his no-nonsense style of play and never-say-die attitude.

In a sit-down with club media, Martinez revealed that these traits have enabled him to connect with Amorim, who is more or less the same.

“It’s the way I like to play, the way of playing football: the passion, the energy.”

“You know, if you have that with me, it’s like you connect quickly. He has many, many good things. I think he demands what the club demands, which is good.”

“I like his passion, his energy, the way he wants to play – good in possession, in defending. I think he’s good – also the staff, the energy around [the place], it [has been] so good, yeah.”

On Amorim’s preference to deploy three central defenders and wing-backs, Martinez said, “It’s with three in the back but, during the game, you have principles.”

“Sometimes you are with four at the back, you are sometimes with five. It depends how they attack, how we attack, how we are in defence. But yeah, I like it.”

“I like the intensity, I like the energy. I like, for example, how he wants to play in possession and without possession as well. So, yeah, I feel great in this system.”

United are back in action later today when they host Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford. Kick-off is at 17:30 GMT.
