Lisandro Martinez hails Lionel Messi as the greatest ever

The opportunity to play alongside Lionel Messi gives Lisandro Martinez “goosebumps,” according to the Manchester United centre-back.

Argentina continue to look to Lionel Messi for inspiration in their quest to win the World Cup, after reaching the quarter-final stage. The 35-year-old has recorded three goals at the tournament this winter and will be looking to add to his account next time out.

Lisandro Martinez isn’t a starter in Lionel Scaloni’s team, but that will change soon as Nicholas Otamendi is not getting any younger. That doesn’t change the fact he has been the best defender in the Premier League this season and nobody comes close.

When asked about playing with Messi, Martinez told AD: “To see Lionel Messi giving everything on the pitch.. I get goosebumps. As a team-mate you give everything for him. He is the greatest of them all. To have him as my team-mate makes me extremely proud.”

This may come as a slap in the face to Cristiano Ronaldo, but he is no longer one of Martinez’s team-mates and I would expect the Argentine to give an honest assessment on who he thinks is the best footballer of all-time regardless of that.

Lisandro Martinez not starting for Argentina

This may come as a bit of a surprise to those who haven’t been watching Argentina ahead of the World Cup, but Scaloni is sticking with his trusted pair of Nicholas Otamendi and Christian Romero.

Martinez did start one game during the group stages, but he has usually been kept as a substitute for when Argentina are trying to grind out results.

Scaloni is unlikely to make too many changes for the quarter-finals.
