Lionesses to face Austria at The Stadium of Light

England will stage their FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia New Zealand 2023 qualifier against Austria at The Stadium of Light.

FAWSL Full-Time were informed of the news this lunchtime via an official press release from The Football Association.

The match will take place on Saturday 27 November and will kick-off at 12.30pm. It will be England’s fifth game of their qualifying campaign for the next FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2023 and will see Sarina Wiegman’s side take on the second-highest ranked side in their qualification group.

The Stadium of Light has proved to be an excellent venue for women’s football with both of Sunderland’s home fixtures in this season’s FA Women’s Championship having been staged there in recent weeks. Sunderland also have a rich history when it comes to developing talented players who have gone on the represent the Lionesses with Steph Houghton, Jill Scott, Lucy Bronze, Demi Stokes, Carly Telford, Lucy Staniforth and Beth Mead having all been on the books of The Lady Black Cats.

Speaking following today’s announcement, England head coach Wiegman said “I am well aware how important the North East of England has been in the development of so many of our squad, and in particular Sunderland. I am delighted we can play in such an impressive stadium and in front of fans who are so passionate about the game. I know it will be a very special day and I hope we can rise to the occasion.”

The game sees England make their first appearance at The Stadium of Light. Tickets for the match have gone on immediate sale to My England Football members while general sale will commence from midday tomorrow via The Football Association’s ticketing website.
