Ruhtless Lionesses brush aside spirited Dutch

Scores: Bronze 32′, Mead 53′, 90′, Toone 72′, Hemp 74′; Martens 22′

England came from behind to beat the Netherland 5-1 as Lauren Hemp put on a stunning individual display as she registered a goal and two assists.

The Netherlands took the lead after 22 minutes when Sherida Spitse’s pin-point corner was guided in by a stunning Lieke Martens header. Their joy, however, was short-lived as England found themselves level within 10-minutes.

A typical Lucy Bronze foray into the final third ended in atypical fashion as the 30-year-old overhit her cross to the back post, which floated over Sari van Veenendaal’s head and nestled into the side netting.

Set pieces continued to cause issues for the Lionesses and although the Netherlands were unable to make them pay, it looked like they would take the lead once more.

Alex Greenwood’s sliding tackle took out Danielle van de Donk and, with a helping hand from VAR, referee Sandra Bráz Bastos awarded the penalty. Spitse, on her 200th cap, stepped up but fired wide, clipping the post on its way through.

England’s reaction was immediate and clinical. Not a minute later, Hemp’s low cross was swept home by a sliding Beth Mead followed by Ella Toone who made the game safe with twenty minutes to go, assisted once again by the Man City forward.

Hemp then wrapped up another stellar personal performance two minutes later with a looping volley into the top corner before Mead finished off the game in added time as she got her second and England’s fifth.

Gejl’s late winner sees Denmark overcome Brazil

Scorers: Thomsen 17′, Gejl 90+1′; Debinha 87′

Mille Gejl’s stoppage-time goal gave Denmark a historic win over a spirited Brazil side in what was an enthralling end-to-end encounter in Copenhagen,

The Danes took an early and deserved lead through a Janni Thomsen stunner. Cutting in from the right win, the 22-year-old unleashed an unstoppable strike into the top corner, well beyond a hopeless diving Lorena.

Denmark would have multiple opportunities to double their advantage but were unable to make Brazil pay as Chelsea’s Pernille Harder – who was almost unplayable in the first half – was denied twice from close range.

Momentum switched after the break as Brazil returned to the field with renewed purpose.

Kerolin Nicoli Israel Ferraz blasted over the bar from six yards out and, with an empty net, Beatriz’s header was blocked by Stine Pedersen before Brazil’s captain Debinha drew the visitor’s level.

With the clock running down there was time for one last twist in the tale as Gejl cooly finished off her one-on-one as Denmark continue their Euro 2022 preparations with aplomb.

Bühl hits hat-trick as Germany thrash Switzerland

Scorers: Bühl 6′, 61′, 66′, Magull 41′, Dallmann 81′, Brand 89′, Lohmann 90+5.

Klara Bühl bagged a hat-trick as Germany made light work of Switzerland yet again.

The Bayern Munich midfielder gave her country the lead after just six minutes, getting slipped through behind the Swiss line on the counter-attack before squeezing the ball past Gaelle Thalman.

Lina Magull made it two just before the break when she turned a cross home at the near post before Bühl sealed her hat-trick with two goals within five minutes midway through the second half.

The 21-year-old saw her attempted cross deceive Thalman and crash in off the underside of the bar but tapping in off a rebound to round up her work for the evening.

Linda Dallmann added a fifth in the final 10 minutes before Jule Brand’s 89th-minute goal made it six.

Sydney Lohmann netted with the last kick of the game to add some gloss to the scoreline for Martina Voss-Tecklenburg’s side.
