Earlier this month, Gerard Romero dropped a huge bombshell when he claimed that Lionel Messi is unlikely to renew his contract with Paris Saint-Germain. The journalist reported that the 35-year-old former Barcelona captain had decided to consider all options at his disposal after winning the World Cup.

It gave renewed hope to Barça about the possibility of re-signing Messi as a possible free agent in the summer. The Catalans have been considering bringing the club legend back if conditions permit and reports that his extension with PSG was not on track was seen as a boost.

However, those claims were dismissed by several media outlets soon and now Alfredo Martinez on SPORT is reporting that Messi will renew his contract with PSG and that his return to Barcelona in the summer is ‘impossible’.

The report states that nothing has changed with regard to Messi and his stance on his future. It is also claimed that the 35-year-old Argentina captain has verbally agreed to extend his contract with the Ligue 1 champions and could stay for one or two more years.

Barcelona had been heavily linked with a move for Messi since before the World Cup. There had been rumours of interest from MLS club Inter Miami as well as Saudi Arabian giants Al Hilal.

However, as per the report, Messi has not received concrete offers from any of the clubs, including Barcelona. The Blaugrana are understood to have made no contact and held no talks with the club legend’s entourage.

As a result, the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner will continue at PSG beyond the current season by signing a new contract with the club. As things stand, a comeback to Barcelona in the summer is not happening.
