Lionel Messi gave the newly-crowned ‘continental champions’ the lead from the penalty spot after eight minutes when he stroked casually into the corner as the Estonian goalkeeper was left rooted to the spot.

On the stroke of half-time, he added a second when Papu Gómez picked him out inside the area and he picked out the far corner with ease to make it two and he claimed his eighth international hat-trick 68 seconds after the restart when a cross from the right was steered into the net by the PSG forward.

Messi wasn’t done there either and scored his fourth when the Estonian defence stopped playing inexplicably and allowed him to breeze through and turn the goalkeeper for one of the easiest goals of his career.

Number five followed, hitting that milestone for the first time in a single game for the Copa América holders, when Julian Álvarez had an effort blocked and the ball eventually broke back his way for another routine finish.

It is the second time in his career he has scored five in a game, 10 years on from doing it for the first time against Bayer Leverkusen.
