PSG went into the game in very poor form.

They had lost their previous three games, against Marseille, Monaco and Bayern Munich.

The Parisians were hoping to return to winning ways against Lille at Parc des Princes.

Things started well for PSG. Goals from Kylian Mbappe and Neymar saw them go 2-0 up in the opening 17 minutes.

But Lille remarkably turned the game on its head. Goals from Bafodé Diakité, Jonathan David and Jonathan Bamba gave the away side a shock lead with 20 minutes remaining.

PSG were not to be denied, though.

Mbappe scored his second of the match in the 87th minute to restore parity.

PSG kept pushing and Messi won it for his side in brilliant fashion in the 95th minute.

Messi won a free-kick for his side roughly 25 yards out. PSG desperately needed some magic from the 35-year-old and he delivered.

The Argentine had a pop at goal and his effort struck the post and nestled into the back of the net.

Pure brilliance from Messi.

That was his 699th club goal of his career. He hasn't scored many more as special as that.

In truth, Messi wasn't at his best during the game at Parc des Princes.

But, as he so often does, he delivered when his side needed him most.

PSG extend lead at top of Ligue 1

PSG have moved up to 57 points and now have an eight-point lead over Marseille at the top of Ligue 1.

Marseille could reduce that gap to five points with a victory against Toulouse on Sunday evening.

PSG and Marseille will then face off on Sunday February 26 for a mouthwatering top-of-the-table clash.
