In doing so, his status as the greatest player of all time is now surely cemented.

Messi scored twice in a quite incredible final against France.

Argentina led 2-0 at half time and it looked as though they would stroll to their third ever World Cup triumph.

Messi had opened the scoring from the penalty spot before the brilliant Angel Di Maria doubled their lead 10 minutes later following a quick counter-attack.

Emiliano Martinez in the Argentine goal was a spectator for 80 minutes as his side dominated.

However, within two minutes, Kylian Mbappe burst into life and scored twice to force extra-time.

The first was from the penalty spot, while the second was a stunning volley.

All the momentum was now with France.

But this final didn’t care for narratives and it was Messi who scored the next goal, with just 12 minutes of extra time remaining.

And yet he and Argentina were still made to wait to lift the trophy because with just a few minutes remaining, France were awarded another spot-kick which Mbappe dispatched to complete his hat-trick.

Both Mbappe and Messi led by example in the penalty shootout with successful kicks.

But misses from Kingsley Coman and Aurelien Tchouameni meant Argentina and Messi could finally get their hands on the trophy.

Incredible.

The celebrations that followed involving Messi and his Argentine teammates were pretty incredible.

It was hours until Argentine left the Lusail Stadium to return to their hotel where they would no doubt have the party of their lives.

And Messi found a few quiet moments to post on social media.

And it might just set the record for the most ‘likes’ on an Instagram post ever which is currently a photo of an egg – which received 56.1 million ‘likes’.

Inside half an hour, Messi’s post has got almost 10 million.
