Ronald Koeman named an attacking line-up for this clash at Camp Nou and it wasn’t long before one of those forwards gave the Blaugrana deserved lead.

Some good work down the left-hand side saw Francisco Trincão on the edge of the area, and the youngster rifled in first time.

The hosts thought they had doubled their advantage moments later when Messi finished off an Antoine Griezmann rebound, however VAR intervened and the goal was ruled out for offside.

But the Ballon d’Or winner did get his goal just a few minutes later as he flicked the ball past a defender and finished wondrously from 25 yards.

After the break it Alavés came out with much more purpose and got a goal back on the hour mark as Luis Rioja stroked the ball past Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

But Barça soon restored their two-goal lead with 20 minutes remaining.

Trincão scored his second of the game a smart finish but the night belonged to Messi who also scored again with another brilliant goal.

It was five not long after, as Junior Firpo opened his account for the season with an easy finish as the Catalan club looked very much back to their best.
