Barcelona enjoyed a sensational second-half to beat Liverpool in their Champions League semi-final first leg.
It was Liverpool who started brightest in Camp Nou, threatening on the counter attack and breezing through midfield at every opportunity.
With less than 10 minutes played, Gerard Piqué was even fortunate not to concede a penalty after tangling with in-form winger Sadio Mané.
However, it was Barcelona who took the lead after Luis Suárez finished brilliantly from Jordi Alba’s pinpoint cross.
Virgil van Dijk and Joël Matip didn’t cover themselves in glory, but the movement from Suárez to find himself in space was world class.
That was his first Champions League goal of the season and Barça’s 500th in the competition.
The second-half was a strange affair as Liverpool pushed hard for a crucial away goal.
Marc-André ter Stegen was at his best to deny Mohamed Salah, before James Milner missed a guilt-edged chance after some excellent interplay.
But as Jürgen Klopp’s men continued to push, Messi found himself on the end of a lucky rebound to slot home with 15 minutes to play.
It was the Argentine again who added insult to injury, scoring an outrageous free-kick to put Barça three ahead – scoring his 600th goal for the club in the process.
Liverpool – dominant for much of this game – will wonder how this first-leg ran away from them, but it’s now Barcelona’s tie to lose.
