Lionel Messi was in sparkling form for Paris Saint-Germain throughout October – and capped off the month by bagging a goal and an assist in a hard-fought 4-3 victory over Troyes on Saturday.

The 35-year-old was absent from the Ballon d’Or nominations list this year for the first time since 2005. If he continues to put in the kind of performances that he has for PSG in recent weeks, though, then the Argentina captain will be impossible to ignore in 2023.

One of the greatest players ever to grace the game, Messi was some way short of his brilliant best during his first season at the Parc des Princes, but has been simply outstanding so far this season.

Messi racked up six goals and five assists across his six appearances for the Parisian outfit in October, a number of which were absolutely sublime – even by Messi’s lofty standards.

His long-range effort against Troyes this weekend summed up just how outrageously good the Barcelona legend has been over the last month.

With his side surprisingly trailing on home turf, Messi took it upon himself to get PSG back into the match with a spectacular left-footed drive from 35 yards out.

He wasn’t done there either, turning provider for Neymar seven minutes later as the hosts took the lead.

It was a fitting way for Messi to sign off an October in which he’s been borderline unplayable at times.

He began the month by scoring a delightful free-kick against Nice – his first in a PSG shirt – and never looked back.

The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner helped himself to three goals and three assists in a pair of Champions League encounters with Maccabi Haifa, with the highlight being his beautiful outside of the foot finish in the second match.

Messi produced another vintage performance in PSG’s 3-0 victory at Ajaccio, scoring a fabulous team goal as well as providing two assists.
