Tuesday was a historic day in football as Lionel Messi’s second-half goal in Barcelona’s 3-0 victory over Real Valladolid took him to 644 goals for Barcelona, breaking Pelé’s long-standing record for most goals for a single club.
The historic moment came in the 65th minute after Pedri’s brilliant backheel played Messi in behind the defence.
Following the match, Messi himself took to Instagram to thank everyone for all the support over the years.
“When I started playing football I never thought I would break any records,” Messi stated.
“And even less the one that I achieved today which belonged to Pelé. I can only thank everyone who helped me over the years, my teammates, my family, my friends and everyone who supports me every day.”
After the match, manager Ronald Koeman claimed that Messi is still happy at the club despite constant rumours that this will be his last season at Camp Nou.
“I’ve said it a lot, I see Leo happy here,” he said.
“He’s very important for us with his creativity. You can see that when there are good players alongside him.”
Messi is on another tear this season, scoring 10 goals and dishing out five assists in 18 matches in all competitions.
