Lionel Messi and Sergio Ramos’ high wages could convince PSG not to offer renewal | OneFootball

PSG’s plans for the upcoming summer transfer window will hinge on their concerns over further Financial Fair Play sanctions from UEFA, with the Ligue 1 leaders having already been hit with a €60m fine – most of which is suspended – last year.

As a result, the contract extensions of both Sergio Ramos and Lionel Messi – both see their deals expire at the end of the season – are far from being formalities, despite the club launching negotiations with both players’ representatives, according to today’s L’Équipe.

Effectively, PSG would like to keep both in the team, but not at their current wages – a monthly €3.375m for Messi and €791,600 for Ramos, according to L’Équipe’s league-wide breakdown released today. Neither the 35-year-old nor the 37-year-old are entertaining the idea of a significant wage cut.

Both are said to have offers on the table from Saudi Arabia. Al-Hilal have been in talks with Jorge Messi and would be prepared to pay the Argentine more than Cristiano Ronaldo’s salary at Al-Nassr. Ramos, meanwhile, would be earning €30m per year over two seasons, four times his wage in the French capital.

Although Ramos has shown this season that he can still be an asset to the team – especially one hit with so many injuries in defence – the Parisians are set to welcome Inter defender Milan Škriniar in a few months. Messi, on the other, seems to be leaning towards the option of leaving – and PSG are unlikely to make any further effort to keep him given they have signed an agreement with UEFA to straighten up their finances over three years. With Mbappé at the heart of the project and Neymar under contract until 2027, the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner is the likeliest departure of the team’s star trident.
