Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe are the deadliest duo in football right now - and that is simply not up for debate.

The two Paris Saint-Germain superstars lined up against Marseille on Sunday evening, with Neymar missing the crucial league match due to injury.

But if anything, the Brazilian's absence only strengthened the connection between Messi and Mbappe.

The pair put fellow Ligue 1 title challengers Marseille to the sword at the iconic Stade Velodrome as PSG secured a 3-0 win - and it was simply glorious to watch.

Messi and Mbappe's first combination of the night resulted in an opening goal by the latter, assisted by the former.

Mbappe then turned provider just three minutes later - and the pass to Messi was worthy of the Argentine himself.

Mbappe is far, far more than just a goal scorer, never forget that. Oh and Messi now has 700 club goals, another absurd record by arguably the greatest footballer in history.

But while PSG's second goal was brilliant, their third in Marseille trumps it by a considerable distance.

Messi and Mbappe worked in tandem once again, producing a footballing work of art against their team's fiercest rivals.

Messi's lofted through ball into the path of Mbappe falls into the 'special' category, while the finish from the free-scoring Frenchman on his supposedly weaker left foot was just pure magic.

When football is played like that, it really is the beautiful game.

If PSG are to stand any chance of overturning their 1-0 deficit in the Champions League last-16 against Bayern Munich, Messi and Mbappe will need to produce similar performances.

Mbappe was only fit enough to be used as a substitute in the first leg, which really hindered PSG at the Parc des Princes.

Christophe Galtier's side travel to the Allianz Arena on March 8th and the match has all the ingredients necessary to be a European classic.
