Lionel Messi and Aitana Bonmatí will be the main award winners at this year’s Ballon d’Or.

That’s according to a report in Spanish daily Sport, which claims that men’s and women’s prizes for best player will have a Barcelona tinge to it this year.

Voting has closed for the men’s and women’s Ballon d’Or and despite competition from the likes of Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland, Sport say that Messi has garnered enough votes to win another golden ball.

If Messi does lift the trophy in Paris in two weeks’ time, then it will extend his number of gongs to eight – a record.

The Inter Miami forward looks like he will be rewarded for playing the key role in Argentina winning the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Bonmatí meanwhile will reportedly replace team mate Alexia Putellas as the best female footballer on the planet.

Putellas has won the award for the past two years but was overtaken by Bonmatí has Barça and Spain’s most important player in the last 12 months.

Bonmati was named as the Player of the Tournament at this summer’s Women’s World Cup, in which Spain beat England 1-0 in the final.

The Ballon d’Or ceremony will take place in Paris on October 30.
