There’s only one Lionel Messi.

Should the Barcelona talisman avoid injury in 2019 and maintain his unbelievable standards, Messi is on pace to break even more records this season.

Thanks to Spanish outlet Marca, we take a look at what Messi could achieve in the new year.

Most trophies at one club

Lionel Messi is just three trophies away from breaking Ryan Giggs’ seemingly unbeatable record of 36 trophies earned at one club.

As we approach the half-way point of the La Liga season, Barcelona are currently on top of table – three points ahead of Atlético Madrid and seven points clear of fourth-placed Real Madrid.

Barcelona will take on Levante in the Copa del Rey round-of-16 next week, while their Champions League round-of-16 tie against Lyon doesn’t begin until February.

Of course, the UEFA Super Cup, Spanish Super Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup trophies are all up for grabs as well.

Most appearances at Barcelona

As long as Messi stays healthy, this record is his… in 2020 or 2021.

Messi is currently on 657 appearances for the Blaugrana, currently 18 games behind Andrés Iniesta for second place on their all-time appearances list.

However, Xavi’s 767 matches still reign supreme.

Most Golden Boots

Messi broke his tie with Cristiano Ronaldo to win his record fifth European Golden Boot last season. Why not six?

Just winning one is hard enough, as there have only been 11 multiple winners in history.

Of course, Messi and Ronaldo are the only players in history to ever win the award more than twice.

Most La Liga wins

Before leaving for Porto four years ago, Iker Casillas cemented his legacy as one of the greatest players in La Liga history.

Casillas won 334 games for Real Madrid and Messi is just 11 wins away.

As long he stays healthy, the record is his.

50 career hat-tricks

Messi is just three goals away from 400 career goals and has 49 hat-tricks to his name.

Wouldn’t it just be poetic for him to achieve both historic milestones at the same time?

Most Pichichi awards

Messi has won the Pichichi award for being La Liga’s top goalscorer five times in his career (Ronaldo ‘only’ won the award three times).

Surprisingly, Messi doesn’t already have his hands on this record.

In a nine-year span, Telmo Zarra of Athletic Bilbao won the award six times between 1945 and 1953.

Messi is currently on 15 La Liga goals, four ahead of team-mate Luis Suárez and Girona’s Cristhian Stuani for the league lead.
