PSG left-back Nuno Mendes (20) was named Ligue 1 Young Player of the Year during Sunday night’s UNFP Awards ceremony. The Portuguese 20-year-old has beaten Lyon forwards Rayan Cherki (19) and Bradley Barcola (20), as well as Monaco sensation Eliesse Ben Seghir (18) and free-scoring Montpellier striker Elye Wahi (20). Former Montpellier youth product Rémy Cabella (33) has taken to Snapchat to vent his disbelief at seeing Wahi denied this accolade. “So the majority of the Ligue 1 players have named Nuno Mendes as Young Player of the Year…“, wrote Cabella.
The Lille attacking midfielder has lauded Mendes and called him “a phenomenon with an amazing potential“. However, the former Newcastle man reminded his followers that the Portuguese wide man had only started 18 Ligue 1 games. Mendes’ season was also disrupted by frequent muscle injuries. According to Cabella, Wahi’s consistency and impressive numbers should have earned him the accolade. “On the other hand, you have Wahi who produced an unbelievable season with 17 goals…” The Montpellier man will try to make it 18 for La Paillade’s last game of the season away at Reims on Saturday.
