Lille striker Jonathan David is on Inter Milan’s radar for a potential transfer next summer.
This according to today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, via FCInter1908, who report that the 23-year-old Canadian international was also a target for the Nerazzurri this summer, whilst they have hardly lost interest in his signature.
Lille striker David has been on Inter’s radar in each of the past two summer transfer windows.
The Canadian is a player who the Nerazzurri see as having the potential to reinforce their attack in both the present and future.
Of course, a key obstacle to a deal for David would be the price tag. Lille reportedly value their star striker at around €60-70 million.
Therefore, Inter would have to make a big sale to afford David in all likelihood. This would not necessarily have to be of a striker who David would replace like-for-like, however, anticipates Tuttosport.
That came as the Nerazzurri’s search for a striker in the wake of their failed pursuit of Romelu Lukaku was underway.
Inter were looking at multiple potential options over the course of a search that lasted several weeks. They considered investing in a top-quality younger player with room to grow.
David was right up there with names like Folarin Balogun and Gianluca Scamacca on the Nerazzurri’s list, Tuttosport reports.
But in the end, Inter went with a different strategy.
The Nerazzurri had been prepared to spend around €40 million on Lukaku, so they considered earmarking that money on a different strike – like David.
But instead Inter went for a lower-cost short-term signing in the position – Marko Arnautovic. This allowed the Nerazzurri to invest the rest in a big money move for defender Benjamin Pavard.
However, Inter’s interest in David remains.
Arnautovic will be 35 next summer. So will Alexis Sanchez.
And even despite Marcus Thuram’s strong start to the season, there is no guarantee that the Frenchman will fully convince Inter.
Therefore, the Nerazzurri are still considering striker targets for next summer as part of their longer-term strategy.
Close to the top of their shortlist of names is David.
However, Tuttosport anticipates, Inter would have to go head-to-head with city rivals AC Milan for the Canadian’s signature. The Rossoneri also consider David to be a major target.
