The teams searching for a striker will have to look elsewhere because Jonathan David won’t transfer in January, even though it’ll be the final chance for his side to cash in on his departure considering his expiring contract.
Lille president Olivier Létang made the announcement to RMC Sport (via Tuttomercatoweb).
“I don’t love the winter window, as you have always to pay more than usual. We’ll lean on the strength of the group. We’re very happy to have him with us. David stayed put in the summer having one year on his deal, but we didn’t pressure him about his sale, also because we didn’t receive worthy bids. We’ve offered him a renewal, and the decision is up to him now. Jonathan loves the club. This is his home.”
David has been linked to Juventus, Inter, and Bayern Munich as a Bosman target. On the other hand, he recently voiced his desire to star for Barcelona in an interview with The Athletic.
“It was always the team I grew up supporting. When you do that, it’s your dream to play for them. Some might say that staying at Lille would be a downgrade, but, for me, there are always opportunities to get better. In the end, my hope is that I had no regrets and that I did everything I could.”
It’s hard to imagine any side would have been willing to pay a robust fee, as Les Dogues’ demands are still fairly sizeable when they could just wait, even if it exposes them to the rivals. Juventus will have to decide quickly whether they want him to replace Dusan Vlahovic to have a real chance.
