Speaking to L’Equipe, Lille president Gerard Lopez confirmed Gabriel will leave the club this summer. At the moment, it seems like Napoli and Everton are the two leading clubs in the race for the 22-year-old, with the Serie A side favourites.
“With Gabriel, we are discussing and we have agreed to let him depart,” Lopez said (via GFFN). “He will choose his next club over the course of this week.”
L’Equipe also previously claimed Arsenal were one of the clubs in the mix. They said earlier this month that the player had five offers, including one from Arsenal. The fee would be around €22m, rising to €25m with bonuses.
Even then, Napoli were favourites, so I wouldn’t put Arsenal ahead of them just yet.
But, if the Gunners can make it into the Europa League with an FA Cup final win this weekend, that would certainly increase their chances of convincing the defender.
Victor Osimhen also looks likely to join Napoli from Lille, and L’Equipe seem to think that will help convince Gabriel.
Arsenal have a former Lille player of their own in the form of Nicolas Pepe, however, so maybe that will aid their cause.
