According to L’Équipe, Lille have been ordered to pay former coach Marcelo Bielsa €2m in compensation. The financial compensation comes following a court dispute between the two parties surrounding the Argentine’s dismissal as Lille manager in 2017. Bielsa was suspended following a string of poor results which saw the club slump into the relegation zone and a falling out with former Lille sporting director Luís Campos.

The Uruguay manager was claiming €19m in compensation from Les Dogues following his dismissal and his initial claim was dismissed. Upon appeal, these claims have been dismissed by the Douai Court of Appeal. However, due to a penal clause in the former Leeds head coach’s contract, Lille have been ordered to pay Bielsa €2m in damages.

When deciding the outcome of the case, the court decided to uphold the terms in Bielsa’s first contract signed in February 2017 and not the one later signed in July which was recognised by the LFP. The Argentine also took Marseille to court over unpaid salary, but a settlement was agreed.
