Likely Rennes XI v Shakhtar Donetsk

Article image:Likely Rennes XI v Shakhtar Donetsk

Rennes host Shakhtar Donetsk for the second leg of their Europa League playoff round tonight. Last week, the Bruno Génésio-led side fell 2-1 at Warsaw, with Lyon loanee Karl Toko Ekambi halving the deficit for Rennes. An exit at this stage of the competition, at the hands of a team that could not play a single competitive game in months due to the invasion of Ukraine, would be a disappointing underachievement. Rennes v Shakhtar Donetsk will kick-off at Roazhon Park at 9pm local time.

Génésio will be without three key players tonight. Malian right-back and skipper Hamari Traoré (31) is on a path to recovery after sustaining a thigh tear, the free-scoring Martin Terrier (25) is out for the season with an ACL injury, and playmaker Benjamin Bourigeaud (29) is suspended after picking up a yellow card in the first leg. The former Lyon manager is set to field Tottenham loanee Djed Spence (22) at right-back. However, Spurs loanee Joe Rodon (25) is not expected to feature against Donetsk tonight as Genesio relies on Jeanuël Belocian (18) and Warmed Omari (22) at the heart of the defense.
