Ligue 1 Results, Matchday 1

Paris Saint-Germain began the defence of their Ligue 1 title with a draw on the opening day of the 2023/24 campaign, whilst Olympique de Marseille, AS Monaco, Stade Rennais and RC Strasbourg Alsace all secured victories.

Nice 1-1 Lille

Gaëtan Laborde’s opener was ruled out by an injury-time equaliser from Bafodé Diakité. That late goal denied Francesco Farioli a dream start as Nice coach, but the draw was a fair result in the Ligue 1 curtain-raiser

Marseille 2-1 Reims

Marseille lost in mid-week in their Champions League qualifier, and they had to come from behind here. Junya Ito opened the scoring by goals from Azzedine Ounahi and Vitniha reversed the deficit to give Marcelino his first win as manager of Les Phocéens.

PSG 0-0 Lorient

PSG’s defence of their Ligue 1 title got underway in underwhelming style. Despite registering over 1000 passes for the first time since Opta began analysing the league in 2006, there was a lack of threat posed by Luis Enrique’s side, who came away with just a point.

Brest 3-2 Lens

Lens pushed PSG close for the title last season, and they looked to be heading for a comfortable victory after creating an early two-goal lead. However, Romain Del Castillo ignited the comeback with a penalty at the end of the first half, and the second half was one-way traffic. Having drawn level, Adrien Thomasson was then harshly sent off for Lens before Del Castillo netted the winning goal with a late penalty.

Nantes 1-2 Toulouse

A repeat of last season’s Coupe de France final, Toulouse were reliant upon an injury-time winner from Danish centre-back Rasmus Nicolaisen. Is another season of struggle in store for Nantes?

Clermont Foot 2-4 Monaco

Adi Hütter’s reign as Monaco manager got off to an exciting start. Having fallen behind, Les Monégasques overturned the deficit. Clermont then hit back to make it 2-2 before Wissam Ben Yedder’s second goal of the day allowed the Principality club to retake the lead. Maghnes Akliouche then scored his first Ligue 1 goal to complete the scoring.

Montpellier 2-2 Le Havre

An Akor Adams debut double wasn’t enough to give Montpellier victory as Le Havre scored a 90th-minute equaliser to earn a point on their return to Ligue 1.

Rennes 5-1 Metz

Rennes ran riot against newly-promoted Met, scoring four goals in the second half. Arnaud Kalimuendo, Amine Gouiri, Jérémy Doku and Ibrahim Salah all got on the scoresheet for Bruno Genesio’s side.

Strasbourg 2-1 Lyon

Patrick Vieira’s reign got off to a perfect start. Strasbourg, with their ambitious BlueCo owners, are seemingly on their way up; the same can’t be said for cash-strapped Lyon. Jean-Ricner Bellegarde and Lebo Mothiba got the goals for Les Alsaciens.
