Game of the week: Olympique de Marseille v OGC Nice, Sunday 19:45 (UK)

Raphaël – A stripped-down PSG side kick-start their month from hell as Toulouse come to town on Saturday; all of Neymar, Kylian Mbappé, and Sergio Ramos nursing injuries. Les Violets have been on a free-scoring run since the turn of the year and could well do Marseille and Lens a favour against the hosts’ increasingly frail backline. Expect Lyon to once again falter against Troyes, and Clermont to continue their unbeaten run since the turn of the year against Monaco.

Angers have the chance to extend their already-record-breaking losing run of 13 games against a new-look Lorient, already the league’s surprise package who have arguably had the best January transfer window in France. All eyes will be on the Vélodrome as Marseille continue to not-so-quietly mount an unlikely title challenge, a resurgent Nice with Didier Digard at the helm posing their toughest task so far this year.

Luke – Despite an ultimately comprehensive win against Montpellier, PSG are yet to replicate their early season form since the return from the World Cup break. They host a Toulouse side that are currently unbeaten in 2023, and whilst Les Parisiens will miss the injured duo of Kylian Mbappé and Neymar, they should still have enough to change that impressive statistic. Two more unbeaten sides in 2023, Clermont and Monaco also meet during this gameweek in what will be a difficult trip for Les Monégasques, who are looking to keep up in the chase for the Champions League places.

Elsewhere, and in form Reims should make light work of a struggling Auxerre side, Lyon will be looking to record back-to-back wins at Troyes, and Lorient host bottom club Angers. The favourites should all prevail in those ties. Nice versus Marseille is the standout game of the round – a feisty Mediterranean derby, this should be an enthralling tie between two teams chasing European football and on top form.
