Ligue 1 Predictions, Round 2

GFFN editor-in-chief  Luke Entwistle and GFFN’s  Raphaël Jucobin face off in our Ligue 1 predictions competition. It’s three points for a correct score, two points for a correct score difference, and one point for a correct result. Who will come out on top at the end of the season?

Game of the week: Olympique Lyonnais v AS Monaco, Saturday 16:00 (UK)

Lyon were brought back down to earth against Rennes on the opening day of the new Ligue 1 season. Under Pierre Sage, they were completely revitalised last season. No team earned more points than Lyon in the second half of last season, not even champions PSG. However, they were way off their game against Rennes, losing 3-0. Is it just a blip or a sign of a more worrying trend? Whilst it is likely the former, there are concerns, especially regarding the new signings. There has been much hype surrounding Moussa Niakhaté and Georges Mikautadze, both of whom arrived for big-money. Both struggled and if they need time to bed in, as they seemingly do, then OL risk having a slow start to the campaign. However, it would be a surprise if there wasn’t some kind of reaction against Monaco, especially with Les Gones at home, in front of their fans for the first time this season.

Monaco will certainly be wary of a reaction from Lyon. The Principality club got their campaign off to a winning start, edging past Saint-Étienne in what was a profligate performance. Whilst they could afford to miss chances against a Saint-Étienne side that offered too much space, they can’t do the same against OL. Despite keeping a clean sheet, defensive concerns remain; if Monaco are to take all three points, they must improve in both boxes.
