Transfer News: Former Manchester United star Ander Herrera turns down Tottenham Hotspur move

Speaking on The Athletic’s Football Podcast (h/t Manchester Evening News), Adam Clayton claims that former Manchester United star Ander Herrera has turned down a move to Tottenham Hotspur.

The Spanish international spent five years at Old Trafford between 2014 and 2019. During that time, he racked up 189 appearances across all competitions, scoring 20 goals and assisting 27 more. Herrera was a part of Man United’s 2016 FA Cup-winning side before also going on to enjoy success in the League Cup and the Europa League in 2017.

Now at Paris Saint-Germain, the 32-year-old continues to make a name for himself at the top level. He was touted as an option for Tottenham Hotspur in a player swap deal that would involve Tanguy Ndombele moving to PSG.

“PSG’s Ander Herrera was mentioned as a name in contention for a swap deal with Tanguy Ndombele at Tottenham.”

The Spurs boss is keen to bring in reinforcements but with the January transfer window set to shut this Monday, he faces a race against time to get the transfer deals done. One of the players Tottenham were keen on was Herrera but the player has no interest in making the switch.

No Herrera for Spurs

A cult hero during his time at Old Trafford, the 32-year-old appears to value the relationship he has with the Red Devils. Clayton confirmed that Herrera is happy in Paris and would only return to English shores if it were to represent Manchester United. The move has been turned down apparently ‘out of respect’ for his former club.

“He’s happy at PSG and I’m told that he would only want to play for Manchester United in England.”

The Spaniard was one of the players who understood what it meant to don the Man United jersey and never shied away from putting his body on the line for the team. It is heartening to see that he continues to hold his time at the Theatre of Dreams in high regard.

A key player during Jose Mourinho’s time at Man United, we could have done with a player of Herrera’s tenacity in the middle of the pitch today. It is unfortunate that his time at the club came to an end rather unceremoniously. Thankfully, we do not have to face the ignominy of watching him wear the jersey of another PL club.

Turning 33 this year, it’s not like the ex-Athletic Bilbao man is in the prime of his career and while there is no solid talk of any interest from Man United for him, fans wouldn’t really mind if we saw a reunion at some point or the other in the future.

Herrera was the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year for the 2016-17 campaign and was also named in the UEFA Europa League squad for the same campaign. It is fair to say that his decision to not represent a domestic rival will only increase his standing amongst the Red Devils faithful. Once a Red Devil, always a Red Devil.
