L’Équipe report today that broadcaster Canal+ will not be able to rescind their contract regarding their right to show two Ligue 1 matches a week. After a ruling by the Nanterre tribunal of commerce, the French channel will be made to show the matches acquired under the package licensed to them by BeIN Sports.

The package was acquired by BeIN in 2018, and is worth €332m. The two channels are currently in litigation over its payment, with the French football authorities expecting a first instalment of €55m to come in by the start of August. Last week, Canal had been authorised to freeze their payments to their partner channel, although this decision was later blocked by the tribunal.

BeIN have also taken the matter of the package’s pricing to the same tribunal in order to renegotiate its price. A hearing has new been set for next Monday, as Canal look to withdraw from broadcasting Ligue 1 games as a result of the €250m package attributed to Amazon for the majority of the games. With a week to go until the new Ligue 1 season kicks off, the league’s broadcasting situation remains unclear.
