In a recent report, Manchester Evening News has revealed that Sporting Lisbon full-back Nuno Mendes is not on Manchester City‘s radar this summer. It is believed that the Mancunian giants are prioritizing a move for a centre-forward, which could rule them out of a move for the Portuguese youngster in this off-season (via Manchester Evening News).

Mendes’ Excellent Rise In Portuguese Football

Mendes is enjoying another impressive campaign in Portuguese football after firmly establishing himself as a regular starter in Ruben Amorim’s first team. The 18-year-old has featured in 34 matches this term, netting one goal and providing two assists in all competitions.

The Portuguese starlet has proven himself to be a valuable contributor in senior football as he is averaging 1.5 tackles, 2.1 interceptions, 1.1 clearances, 0.6 shots, 1.0 key passes and 1.5 dribbles per game in the Liga NOS. He has even been tidy with his ball distribution, as evidenced by his pass success rate of 79.8% in the Portuguese top tier (stats via whoscored).

Mendes’ current contract at José Alvalade Stadium is set to expire in the summer of 2025, so it would have taken a big-money move from Man City if they were to stand a chance of signing him during this summer transfer period.

Should Pep Guardiola Change His Stance On A Potential Summer Move For Mendes?

Mendes is blessed with electric pace and can make some hard-working runs down the left flank. He has transformed himself into a reliable defensive presence at the back as he can time his tackles well to earn possession back for his side.

The Portuguese whizkid is also not shy of putting his foot through the ball when the opposition are closing in on him on the defensive end of the pitch. At 18, Mendes has the potential to grow into a future star in European football, so Man City should reconsider their stance on him this summer.

Benjamin Mendy has struggled to impress during his time at the Etihad Stadium. Therefore, Guardiola should weigh his options on whether to let him go and bring in someone young like Mendes who would provide some healthy competition for Oleksandr Zinchenko for a place in the Man City starting XI.

Mendes would add plenty of pace and defensive stability to Guardiola’s backline that has already performed at a high level. Plus, the Portuguese left-back would have a good resale value in the long run which is why Man City should think about altering their stance over making a summer move for him.
