Mexico’s return to the top club competition in the Americas could have to wait a bit longer based on today’s comments from Liga MX president, Mikel Arriola.

Despite the fact that the leaders of Mexican football are trying desperately for Mexico’s reintegration back in the Copa Libertadores, where they participated from 1998 to 2016.

It was on TUDN’s En Tus Zapatos (in your shoes) podcast where Arriola mentioned the reasons for the clubs to not participate in the tournament again.

“We will not go if they continue to treat us unequally,” he said.

“So what if Mexico have more resources and more sponsors… if it turns out that we are in first place and we cannot play the final back in our country, we are at a major disadvantage.

“It seems to me that we should not accept those terms.”

For now, it’s still in the air whether or not Mexican clubs will return to the Copa Libertadores by 2022. However, after these statements, the long-awaited return could be postponed.

An official decision is expected to be made by Conmebol in May.
