MIAMI – Women’s football is back. After the winter break, the leagues from all over the world are returning to action. In Concacaf, the first ones to take the pitch are the players of the Liga MX Femenil, having their first week of games this past weekend in the Torneo Clausura 2023.
The first match of the new season saw Queretaro against Pachuca on Saturday evening. Both teams went out to the pitch to give it their all in their first encounter. Former Club America player Janelly Farias made her debut for her new team, Pachuca, giving las Tuzas more security in the back line. It wasn’t until the second half though, in the 83’, when Charlyn Corral scored the only goal of the night, giving Pachuca their first three points of the year, 1-0.
Saturday evening also had the “Clasico Joven”, with two Mexico City teams facing each other, Cruz Azul as hosts, welcoming in Club America. Both teams reinforced their squads in the transfer window this past month, leaving fans with great anticipation as to what their game plans would be. An early goal from Kiana Palacios in the 13’ gave Las Aguilas the lead, however, in the 22’, Cruz Azul found the 1-1 draw from the boots of Dalia Molina, who took advantage of a defensive mistake.
On Monday evening, FC Juarez showed how good they reinforced their squad and football project, downing Mazatlan FC 7-0. Jasmine Cazares opened up the scoring for Las Bravas in the 25’. Myra Delgadillo, one of the most important signings of the season, celebrated her first two goals in the Liga Mx Femenil, scoring the first one in the 36’.
Miah Zuazua scored her first goal of the season in the 50’, also leaving the pitch with an assist. Sumiko Guitierrez scored the fourth goal in the 54’, followed by a Melissa Sosa own goal in the 88’. Delgadillo closed the night with the seventh goal, putting FC Juarez at the top of the table.
To close the first week, Tigres took to the pitch of the Estadio Universitario on Monday evening as current champions, and they proved that by defeating Atlas 6-0. Last season’s Golden Boot winner, Mia Fishel, scored the first one early in the game, in the 7’. By the 31’ she increased the gap by scoring her second goal. Nigerian international Uchenna Kanu was awarded player of the match, as she went on to score a hat trick in the 51’, 60’ and 90’. Lizbeth Ovalle presented herself this season with a goal in the 76’ and an assist.
