Mexican football is getting ready to experience the second edition of the eLiga MX after the success it had while live football was a distant memory.
Through a statement made on Tuesday, Liga MX confirmed the 2021 edition of the virtual tournament, in which the 18 clubs of the First Division will participate.
“The teams will be represented, virtually, by the best professional Mexican players (one starting player and one substitute for each Club).
“The tournament will aim to define the Mexican ‘gamer’ who will obtain a place in the North American play-offs together with the best players in the region, on their way to the FIFA e-World Cup 2021™.”
The draw will take place later tonight. The 18 teams will be divided into three groups of six teams each and play one another in a round-robin format, with the games beginning on 11 May.
The top-two teams from each group will automatically qualify, while only two of the three third-place teams will move onto the quarter-finals following a round-robin repechaje.
Each of the knock-out rounds will be a two-legged tie, with the Grand Champion to be crowned on 30 May.
Club León, with Nicolás Sosa at the helm, were the first champions of the BBVA MX eLiga.
