Barcelona came from a goal down to claim a 5-1 home victory over Costa Adeje Tenerife on match-day 11 of the Liga F season. Elsewhere, Atlético Madrid were held to a draw in their home meeting with Eibar.
There were seven games, rather than eight, that took place at the weekend after Real Madrid’s away match against Real Sociedad was postponed. Here, we will round up all the action from the final match-day before the international break.
Sevilla edged out 10-player Dépor to end a three-game losing run at the weekend. Gemma Gili curled the ball in at the far post to give Sevilla a narrow lead at the break. The visitors were dealt another setback in the 53rd minute when goalkeeper Inês Pereira was sent off for making a reckless challenge on Fatou Kanteh outside the box. Paula Partido made full use of the numerical advantage, netting her first Sevilla goal to put her side in a strong position.
Oriana Altuve pulled a goal back in stoppage time, but it ultimately proved too little too late as Sevilla celebrated a precious victory. Dépor announced following the game that manager Irene Ferreras had been dismissed and subsequently replaced by Fran Alonso. The new boss will be tasked with guiding the club out of the relegation zone.
Saturday’s clash between Badalona and Espanyol produced plenty of drama in the second half. First, Badalona’s María Llompart saw her 52nd-minute penalty saved by Espanyol goalkeeper Romane Salvador. The visitors took advantage of that crucial save to break the deadlock in the 80th minute.
Iara Lacosta drove a low shot through María Valenzuela’s legs to score what appeared to be the winning goal. However, Badalona had other ideas, as Rébecca Elloh netted a late equaliser to rescue a point for her side.
Athletic looked set to play out a goalless draw until Maitane Vilariño found the breakthrough with 15 minutes to play of regulation time. The substitute thumped home an unstoppable volley after she latched onto Paola Ulloa’s punch from a corner. As a result of the win, Athletic are in fifth place, while Madrid CFF are four points adrift in 11th position.
Levante’s Ana Franco scored an early opener to give her side the lead in Sunday’s home clash with Granada. However, the visitors produced a positive response after the break, scoring three goals in a nine-minute period to stamp their authority on the contest.
First, Edna Imade thumped the ball home from close range to restore parity, before Laura Requena headed in from Laura Perez’s inviting cross. Alexia Fernández went on to add a third to leave Levante with a mountain to climb. Inés Rizo pulled a goal back in stoppage time, but it proved to be a consolation in a narrow defeat. The result has left Granada in ninth position and Levante just two points above the drop zone.
Barcelona had to come from behind to clinch maximum points in Sunday’s home meeting with Costa Adeje Tenerife. Rinsola Babajide tapped the ball in from close range to give her side a surprise third-minute lead. The visitors held onto their slender advantage until Irene Paredes netted a 38th-minute equaliser.
Ewa Pajor then prodded the ball home to put the hosts in front, before Caroline Graham Hansen scored from the penalty spot. As the game moved past the hour mark, Clàudia Pina drove a long-range strike in at the near post to add a fourth to Barcelona’s tally. There was still plenty of time for Esmee Brugts to put her name on the scoresheet, wrapping up another successful Liga F outing for Pere Romeu’s Barcelona side.
Atleti would have been frustrated to drop two points in their home clash against Eibar. However, it could have been worse for the hosts after they fell behind in the 57th minute. Ane Campos pounced on Lola Gallardo’s parry to net her third goal of the Liga F season. Fiamma Benítez Iannuzzi pulled Atleti back onto level terms when she guided the ball home from Luany’s cutback. However, Atleti were unable to push on to score a late winner, ensuring they had to be content with a share of the spoils.
Valencia are left languishing at the foot of the table with just two points to their name after failing to take anything from their home meeting with Real Betis. Carolina Férez scored against her former club to give the visitors a narrow half-time lead. Betis went on to double their advantage in the opening stages of the second period. Dorine Chuigoué produced a left-foot volley to beat Antonia Canales and wrap up all three points.
