Hull City boss Liam Rosenior has credited his style of play and goalkeeping coach Barry Richardson with playing a key part in luring Newcastle United goalkeeper Karl Darlow to the MKM Stadium, according to Hull Live.

The 32-year-old has been linked with several Championship clubs in the past 12 months, previously being eyed by Middlesbrough and West Bromwich Albion during the summer window.

With Boro bringing in Zack Steffen and Liam Roberts though and then-Albion boss Steve Bruce opting against strengthening his goalkeeping department, the shot-stopper stayed at the Magpies during the first half of the game time.

In what year were Hull formed?

1904 1914 1924 1934

His game time always looked as though it was going to be limited under Eddie Howe, a situation that was only made worse when Martin Dubravka returned from his loan spell at Manchester United with Nick Pope and Loris Karius also available as other options for the Tyneside outfit.

And both Hull and Huddersfield Town were believed to be interested in luring him away from St James’ Park, with the latter previously in desperate need of addressing this area following an injury to Lee Nicholls.

But it was Hull that came out on top in this race – and Rosenior has explained why Darlow committed himself to the Tigers for the rest of the season.

He said: “There was competition for Karl, as there has been competition for Malcolm and Aaron.

“I think the fact that Karl has a real understanding of the way we want to play, I think that’s a huge draw for him in terms of his learning and his development as a goalkeeper. The fact he’s had a really good working relationship with Barry (Richardson; goalkeeping coach) before as well.

“Players make decisions based on not just money, they make their decision on where they think the club is going and for us to sign Karl, shows exactly our intentions of where we want to go.”

The Verdict:

Darlow may be keen to make his move permanent in the summer and that’s why he would have wanted to pick a club who are almost guaranteed to be competing in the top two tiers of English football next season.

Which league Huddersfield will be in remains to be seen, with Mark Fotheringham’s side struggling massively this season.

If Darlow had come in alongside Tomas Vaclik as well, he wouldn’t have been guaranteed a start at the John Smith’s Stadium so you can definitely understand why the 32-year-old wouldn’t have chosen to join the Terriers at this stage.

Hull, on the other hand, could potentially push for a spot in the top six this season. A lot has been said about the rise of other teams – but Hull are doing fantastically well at the moment under Rosenior.

And they could be set for an exciting final few months of the season, something that Darlow will want to be involved in.

It wouldn’t be a surprise if the experienced stopper became disconnected from the project at Newcastle considering his limited game time – and he will be desperate to make up for that by starting regularly at his new team.
