FA argue a three-match ban would be “clearly insufficient”

Millwall goalkeeper Liam Roberts could face an extended ban after the FA submitted a claim to increase the sanction for his red card.

The 30-year-old was sent-off in his side’s FA Cup defeat to Crystal Palace for a head-high tackle on Jean-Philippe Mateta, one that saw the striker stretchered off and taken to hospital to receive 25 stitches.

Mateta has since confirmed he is “doing well”, but Palace were left furious by the challenge and chairman Steve Parish insisted Roberts had "endangered a fellow professional and maybe his life".

Roberts would ordinarily serve a three-man ban, however the FA have stated that is “clearly insufficient” in calling for a more severe punishment.

A statement read: “The FA has submitted a claim seeking to increase liam Roberts’ sanction following his sending off in the FA Cup tie between Millwall and Crystal Palace on Saturday, 1 March.

“The goalkeeper was sent off for serious foul play around the sixth minute. The FA claims that in the circumstances the standard punishment for this offence is clearly insufficient.

“Liam Roberts has until Thursday, 6 March, to provide a response.”

The appeal will be heard by a Regulatory Commission, with Millwall and Roberts now having to provide evidence to support a three-match suspension being sufficient.

Speaking at half-time at Selhurst Park on Saturday, Parish took aim at Roberts for what he described as “the most reckless challenge” he had ever seen.

“So far what we know is he’s got a bad gash behind his ear and a head injury,” Parish told BBC Sport.

“Obviously he’s at the hospital, we hope for the best. There’s a lot of emotion in football but we need to talk about that challenge. In all the time I’ve watched football, I’ve never seen a challenge like it. I looked to see how old the keeper was - he’s 30 years old.

“That is the most reckless challenge on a football pitch I think I’ve ever seen. I think he needs to have a long hard look at himself that lad, because he’s endangering a fellow professional, maybe even his life with a challenge like that.
