Sheffield Wednesday defender Liam Palmer says his side are determined to win the League One title this season after going top of the table.

The Owls went top with a 1-0 win over fellow promotion contenders Plymouth Argyle at Hillsborough on Saturday, with Callum Paterson’s seventh-minute strike securing three crucial points and moving them above their opponents on goal difference.

Darren Moore’s side now sit six points clear of third-placed Ipswich Town after their sixth consecutive league victory, while it extends their unbeaten run to 22 games in all competitions.

They face another huge clash next weekend as they make the trip to face the Tractor Boys at Portman Road.

Palmer has been a key part of the Wednesday defence which is the best in the division, having conceded just 18 goals all season, while they have also kept 17 clean sheets.

The 31-year-old sent a defiant warning to the Owls’ automatic promotion rivals, saying that now they have reached the summit, they intend to stay there.

“Yeah, we want to be top of the tree, we’ve made no secret about that. As footballers, we set out to be the best we can, play against the best and that’s what we’ve done today,” Palmer told Yorkshire Live.

“We’ve leapfrogged them in terms of places, leapfrogged everyone in terms of goals scored so we want to keep going now and to kick on [for the rest of the season.”

The Verdict

It was an outstanding afternoon for Wednesday against the Pilgrims.

The Owls underlined their promotion credentials with the victory over an Argyle side who have spent much of the season in the top two.

Palmer’s comments highlight the mentality in the Wednesday squad and the determination to secure promotion this season, but to do so in the most emphatic way possibly by winning the league.
