Manchester Unitedโs pursuit of Liam Delap has taken a significant twist, with Everton manager David Moyes confirming his interest in the Ipswich Town striker, according to TeamTalk. The 22-year-old has emerged as a top target for both clubs ahead of the summer window, with Delapโs goalscoring exploits in a struggling side catching the eye of several Premier League suitors.
Despite Ipswich Townโs immediate return to the Championship, Delap has shone brightly, netting 12 goals and contributing two assists across the campaign. His performances have remained consistent even as the Tractor Boys confirmed their relegation with four matches remaining after suffering their 21st defeat of the season.
The powerful 6ft 1in forward remains one of the few positives in an otherwise disappointing year for Kieran McKennaโs side, who fought back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Everton at Goodison Park last weekend. George Hirstโs late goal salvaged a point for Ipswich, but it was Delapโs presence and link-up play that drew admiring glances.
Both Manchester United and Everton are targeting attacking reinforcements this summer. For United, scoring has been a particular problem under Ruben Amorim. With just 39 goals in 34 Premier League games, only four sides have found the net less frequently. The club views Delap as a long-term option to lead the line and complement incoming forward Matheus Cunha.
Sources suggest Delap tops Unitedโs shortlist, with the club actively progressing talks to meet Ipswichโs asking price and satisfy the strikerโs personal demands. Unitedโs interest remains firm, but Evertonโs sudden move could complicate matters.
David Moyes, speaking after Evertonโs draw with Ipswich, publicly declared his intent to bring Delap to Bramley-Moore Dock: โHe would be one who we would certainly have an interest in. I think what he probably has to look at will probably be bigger than what we are. So, we would certainly be interested if he was interested in us. Thatโs for sure.โ
The Toffees, keen to mark the start of their new era at their soon-to-open stadium with a statement signing, are weighing Delap as a long-term successor to Dominic Calvert-Lewin, whose contract runs out at the end of June.
Ipswich initially valued Delap at ยฃ40 million, but their relegation has triggered a release clause allowing him to leave for ยฃ30 million. That figure could tempt both Manchester United and Everton, particularly with the playerโs potential and homegrown status.
However, itโs the strikerโs wage demands that may prove more decisive. Currently earning ยฃ20,000 per week, Delap is reportedly seeking a package in the region of ยฃ120,000 to ยฃ150,000 per week โ a rise of up to 650 percent.
Such a sharp increase could price Everton out of the race, given their need to operate within financial constraints. Manchester United, though, may view the investment as worthwhile given Delapโs age, physical profile, and ceiling for growth.
While Moyesโ comments show Everton are serious about Delap, Manchester United remain in pole position. The Red Devils are understood to be advancing negotiations on multiple fronts, not only for Delap but also a towering 6ft 5in defender available on a free, with Real Madrid and Barcelona also circling.
Additionally, one United star is reportedly set to commit his future to the club, aiming to see out his career at Old Trafford. Outgoings will also influence Unitedโs summer dealings, with interest growing in Antony, currently on loan at Real Betis.
As the transfer window edges closer, the race for Liam Delap is heating up. With both Manchester United and Everton ready to table offers, the next few weeks could be decisive in shaping where one of Englandโs brightest young forwards will be playing his football next season.
