Paris Saint-Germain is the marquee name in French football since 2011 when Qatar Sports Investments purchased the club. Over the past ten years, PSG has been on a quest to win the UEFA Champions League.

Furthermore, it’s been close to 30 years since a French club won Europe’s top competition, and 25 years since a team from France has won a European tournament.

The capital club is always looking to improve its squad to win the Champions League, but the rest of Ligue 1 put business first instead of prioritizing Europe.

For example, Lille OSC recently won the league against the French giants. However, instead of improving the team for the Champions League next season, they’ve already sold goalkeeper Mike Maignan to AC Milan.

In an interview with L’Equipe (via Paris Fans), Vincent Labrune, president of Olympique de Marseille from 2011 to 2016, now president of the Ligue de Football Professionnel, spoke about the woeful displays from French clubs aside from PSG.

“It’s been twenty-five years since we won a European competition and fortunately for ten years. We have the PSG and its president Nasser Al-Khelaïfi who has enormously helped French football and brought us at arm’s length on the European scene. Otherwise, I don’t know where we would be,” Labrune said.

The summer transfer has yet to open, and Lille has already said goodbye to their manager that won the club Ligue 1 and their starting goalkeeper. So it’s going to be hard to see them making an impact in the Champions League.

French football will have a one-off club making a deep run in Europe, AS Monaco and Olympique Lyonnais come to mind. Nonetheless, PSG is consistent in bringing some respectability to Ligue 1, who many often call a “Famers League.”
