After turning down numerous bids this summer, Huddersfield Town have managed to secure an agreement with vice-captain Lewis O’brien to keep him at the club for the foreseeable future.

O’Brien has developed into one of the Championship’s top midfielders in his time at the Terriers, having been a first-team player since becoming a regular during the 2019-20 season.

A loan deal with Bradford City assisted O’Brien’s development and after playing 42 Championship matches last season, Premier League interest began to grow.

They had more than 50% of possession against Derby County on the opening day. True or False?

It was the Terriers’ Yorkshire neighbours in Leeds United who tried to bring O’Brien to Elland Road this summer, with Huddersfield chairman Phil Hodgkinson detailing that four offers were rejected from Marcelo Bielsa’s side – the final one totalling £13 million but not all of that was guaranteed to be paid.

And in a complete show of faith to the club that brought him through the academy, O’Brien has penned an extension until 2025 now the transfer window has closed and via Twitter has commented on the new deal.

The Verdict

This is a huge statement of intent for Huddersfield who have had a better start to the season than expected.

If Leeds had guaranteed more of the transfer offer up-front for O’Brien instead of it being in performance-related instalments then the story might be different and O’Brien may have swapped Town for United, but he’s showed loyalty to his club and in this day and age it’s pretty rare.

O’Brien is a real driving force of the Huddersfield midfield and it would have been hard for the club to find a natural replacement, so his decision to stick by Carlos Corberan is a big one.
