And Lewandowski, 34, was reportedly left frustrated after Fati, 20, got in the way of a cross which was clearly intended for him in the dying stages of the game.

The Poland international was visibly irritated as television cameras showed him throwing his arms in the air in frustration.

AS claims he approached him in the locker room afterwards and the experienced striker - who is normally quite reserved - gave the youngster a real piece of his mind.

After the game, Lewandowski publicly thanked supporters for their support.

He wrote: “We fought until the last minute but unfortunately it wasn’t enough tonight.

“We are disappointed, but we still have trophies to win this season.

"Thank you for your support.”

Barca still have ambitions of winning La Liga and the Copa del Rey so Xavi will be hoping they can sort it out so it doesn't impact the rest of the season.

Speaking after the game, he said: "Matches in Europe are decided by small details and we have not controlled them.

"That's why we're out. The feeling is that we have been much better than last season, but we have lost to Bayern [Munich], Inter [Milan], Manchester. We have not measured up.

"We have to try to be more competitive and make an important self-criticism to try again next season. It's a shame because the team has shown its face and deserved more. They are physically very strong.

"We could have dominated the game more. The only positive thing is that on Sunday we already have a game and we have to focus on Almeria and on Thursday in the semifinal of the cup. There are two titles left and we want to win them because they are very important for the club,"
