Robert Lewandowski has climbed above Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema in the Champions League all-time scorers chart.

The 34-year-old doubled Barcelona’s advantage in the 34th minute, firing a powerful low shot from the top of the box, scoring a competition first in the Blaugrana.

Despite Barcelona conceding just a minute beforehand, Lewandowski restored the hosts two goal advantage with a brave back-post header on the stroke of halftime.

The Poland international’s first-half brace was his 87th and 88th goals in the competition, climbing beyond Benzema (86 goals).

But he wasn’t done there, adding fourth and completing his hat trick (his sixth in the competition) after the hour mark. Lewandowski ran onto Ferran Torres’ layoff to stroke home a first-time effort from outside the box.

In doing so, the 34-year-old has become the first player in history to score a hat-trick with three separate teams.

As they age like fine wine, it’s a straight shootout for third place between Barcelona and Real Madrid’s frontmen who may even have loftier ambitions.
