It could have been so much better for the visitors as it was all about Erling Haaland early on. He first zipped a low deflected strike beyond Manuel Neuer after just 75 seconds before tapping in from close range on nine minutes.

That dream start should have been extended with a hat-trick too but, not for the first time, Thomas Meunier’s final ball let him down when he should have set the Norwegian up for an easy third – and they were made to pay.

In typical fashion, Robert Lewandowski pounced moments later to pull one back by turning in a low Leroy Sané cross and by half-time, the sides were level through that man again.

A VAR check showed Mo Dahoud had fouled Kingsley Coman in the area and the Pole stepped up to calmly tuck away from the penalty spot.

The second half was mostly marred by injuries instead of continued goalmouth action as Haaland, Dan-Axel Zagadou and Jérôme Boateng all exited before Bayern came up with a stunning last gasp double whammy to complete their comeback.

With two minutes remaining, Emre Can’s appeals for a foul were waved away, allowing Bayern to break and win it in dramatic fashion when Leon Goretzka pounced on a slack Meunier clearance to volley in via the upright.

Lewandowski then completed the scoring, and his hat-trick, with a low drive for his 20th goal against his former employers. No player has scored more against Dortmund in the Bundesliga.

The result moves the champions back to the top, two points clear of RB Leipzig, while BVB stay in sixth, four points off the Champions League places.
