According to reports, Robert Lewandowski has ended his multi-million Euro sponsorship deal with Huawei, following allegations that the Chinese tech firm have been aiding Russia in blocking cyber attacks.

I would like to inform you that we have made a decision today to end the marketing cooperation between Robert Lewandowski and the Huawei brand“, announced Lewy’s manager Tomasz Zawiślak, as reported by WP SportoweFakty. “Thus, the implementation of all promotional services has been suspended on our part.”

Lewandowski has been outspoken in his stance towards Russia, ever since their military invaded Ukraine earlier this month. As the Poland national team captain, he was quick to issue a statement in support of the PZPN’s stance that the team would not play their World Cup qualifier against the nation of the aggressors. In recent matches for Bayern Munich, he has also worn an armband in the colours of the Ukrainian flag.

The Daily Mail reported over the weekend that the Chinese company had helped to stabilise Russian networks after hacking group Anonymous had targeted them in order to show the truth of what was happening in Ukraine, to a country whose media is strictly forced to toe the government’s line. The accusation was refuted by Huawei.

According to the reports, Lewandowski’s decision will cost him in the region of €5 million, having only agreed a new sponsorship deal with the company to promote its phones and smart watches in January.
